FEDERATION OF MALAYA The Federation of Malaya was a political entity that existed from 1 February 1948 to 16 September 1963, before the formation of Malaysia. The Federation of Malaya was formed on 1 February 1948, replacing the earlier Malayan Union (1946–1948), which had faced strong opposition from Malay nationalists. It consisted of 11 states: nine Malay sultanates and two British Straits Settlements — Penang and Malacca. It was a federal system under British protection, with internal self-government. The British High Commissioner acted as the head of government, but the Malay rulers maintained authority in their respective states. The Federation of Malaya Constitution provided a framework for administration and governance.
